    I'm in the process of building an acoustic guitar with purpleheart, hard maple and african mahogany layers on the neck and bindings and a bloodwood fretboard. I can definitely say that purpleheart, while eye catching, is a MASSIVE pain for small detailed hand work. The mahogany feels like clay in comparison. I've also noticed the purpleheart has a tendency to blacken pretty badly when using power tools so it requires a little extra care. The back and sides are Indian rosewood because as you said, the Brazilian stuff is just hard to find. 😅

    Hi Rob, do you think the buttons need to necessarily be glued to the top? Planning to use it in a bench and would like to be able to disassemble in the future to refresh the surface, but also don’t want to compromise the stability.

    Two things .....Clamping a board to the back instead of planing into your work seems like a better alternative to having a referance to marking the second joint !! and you can fix dovetails if a slight mistake has been made using a sliver of wood to rebuild the joint --- and it would be undetectable! Working with walnut has taught me to expect the unexpected and be prepared to fix defects !!!!!!!!

    I own bench planes by Lie Nielson, Clifton, Clico and Veritas. A few old Stanley and record ones too. In the UK, clifton are priced more competitively than Lie Nielson. My 5 1/2 came perfect out the box. I did swap out the chip breaker, older two piece one, with one from Ron Hock, (that need a tickle to flatten the back too)but that is personal preference and have done the same on all the clifton I have. It is my go to bench plane. Real workhorse. I own a no. 4 and no. 6 by nielson, both needed work to get them working well, especially around the castings in front of the iron. Suppose as with most things mass produced, they don't all arrive as perfect as we would like.

    155, they are talking about slop in the adjustment dial in Stanley's that is just inherent to the system. Could you put two washers as spacer's to reduce the slop? Or even snap rings?

    Hey Rob, I finally made my first bench! It's not as nice as yours, but it's based on a Moravian knockdown bench. I'm using 18mm ply for the top, so I can easily move it outside to use my router sled. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for all the lessons, especially the tusked tenon episode, which helped me immensely!

    Micro bevels are some internet born horseshit that have no scientific or testable basis for existing. Proper sharpening and maintenance it even takes more time to deface your iron with that micro bevel than it does to just sharpen it properly.

    Nope; right there with ya on the red oak, which grows in immense profusion on my property and in my area 😞. No thank you; can't stand the stuff, and unfortunately if I want a cheap hardwood around here, I can have red oak in ton lots (OK, that may be a bit of an exaggeration...). It's hard to plane, hard to surface, and rots if you let the dew land on it. I spend the $$ for white oak and am happy to have done so.

    Hello Rob, I actually am ending up with spaghetti-like shavings when I go thin enough. And at first I was thinking ''that's probably the grain structure of oak'' but now that I've done some pieces of pine, and still ending up with spaghetti. I started questioning whether my edge might be too rough. I only have a diamond medium coarse stone of DMT and that's actually the only thing I really trust to be accurate regarding grit contamination. But could this be the reason why I get the spaghetti or do you think something else is more likely?

    • @RobCosmanWoodworking
      @RobCosmanWoodworking 5 дней назад

      If you want to get rid of the serrations in your shavings, you will need to move up to 16,000 grit. The diamond stones leave too coarse of a surface finish on the edge.

      @@RobCosmanWoodworking You must be right. I really carefully sharpened my blade with sandpaper up to 3000, I don't have any finer paper. I got some diamond paste coming in once it's available again, 6 micron, and I also got the green stuff at 3 micron. I now get very fine lines with the 3000 finish

  • @deemdoubleu

    Hi Rob, a problem I seem to have is trying to plane the front once glued together because the plane scuffs across the grain on the opposing edge. If I finish plane the pieces before glue up then I find it really difficult to get a perfectly smooth join on the face i.e. without a slight lip one way or the other. Any ideas? Also if I try to finish the face surface before glue up it inevitably gets dirty with all the handling and marred with glue squeeze out. It's so hard to get a perfect result!

    I'm new to carpentry, looking for my first block plane and I have the money to spend. But... Reading through the comments, it appears Veritas is missing here. Perhaps personal issues with Mr. Cosman and Veritas? I could dig for an answer here but I'll just leave it at that. This is a great review but incomplete. I now have to go to a different reviewer who includes the Veritas to make a more informed decision.

    Honestly I think you’re just too picky about things 99% of woodworkers wouldn’t notice. Does it shave wood well ? Yes it does . Importing heavy stuff is expensive and every pair of hands that touch it has to make money.
